Once the CIA helped the military overthrow the democratically-elected government of Jacob Arbenz in 1954, Guatemala was run by a series of military dictators such as General Romeo Lucas Garcia and General Efrain Rios Mont. As many as 10,000 indigenous people were killed and over 100,000 sought refuge in Mexico as a result of Mont's campaign where "A Christian has to walk around with his Bible and his machine gun."
