In the early days of WWI, did Americans sympathize more with Germany or Britain?

Americans during the first and second world wars didn't want to be involved Pearl Harbor and Germany's declaration of war against us changed that. The reason that the American people felt that way was because at that time their were many German families in the US with relatives in Germany and also many industries in the US was owned by German immigrants.
