How to Keep my dog from running away!?

My dog Scotch she is half lab and half golden retriever. She is a wonderful dog and she is so lovey but her one default is she likes to go for runs by herself. We used to live in a small town and it didn't really matter because she always comes back on her own. Now we are moving to a city and I am really scared she will run and get hit by a car or soemthing. I need to figure out how to get her to stay in our yard. I really can't afford the fence-less fence things either. Plus we are just renting the house. So I don't want to get that and pay all that money and then move. PLEASE HELP! I love her and I don't want her to get ran over
